Gaviscon Advance Oral Suspension is used to relieve symptoms caused by the reflux of stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes into the oesophagus. These symptoms include heartburn, acid regurgitation, and indigestion, which may occur after meals, during pregnancy, or as a result of conditions such as hiatus hernia, reflux oesophagitis, or following gastric surgery. It can also help relieve symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux, including hoarseness, sore throat, cough, and voice changes. Gaviscon Advance may be used alongside acid-suppressing medicines or after stopping them
● Adults and children aged 12 years and over:
Take 5–10 ml after meals and at bedtime (one to two 5 ml measuring spoons).
● Children under 12 years:
Use only on the advice of a doctor.
● Elderly:
No dose adjustment is required.
● Hepatic impairment:
No dose adjustment necessary.
● Renal impairment:
Use with caution if you are on a strictly restricted salt diet.
Each 10 ml dose contains:
● Sodium alginate 1000 mg
● Potassium hydrogen carbonate 200 mg
Each 1 ml contains:
● Sodium alginate 100 mg
● Potassium hydrogen carbonate 20 mg
Other ingredients include calcium carbonate, carbomer 974P, methyl parahydroxybenzoate
(E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment), and purified
water.
● If symptoms do not improve after 7 days, seek medical advice.
● This medicine contains sodium:
○ 57.85 mg sodium per 5 ml (2.9% of the WHO recommended maximum daily
intake)
○ The maximum daily dose provides 23.14% of the recommended daily sodium
intake
● This product is considered high in sodium and should be used with caution in patients on
a low-salt diet, including those with heart failure or kidney disease.
● Contains potassium (39.06 mg per 5 ml), which should be considered in patients with
kidney problems or those on a controlled potassium diet.
● Each 10 ml contains 200 mg of calcium carbonate. Caution is required in patients with
high calcium levels, kidney stones, or related conditions.
● Contains parabens (methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate), which may cause allergic
reactions.
● Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients
Like all medicines, this product can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Possible side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting
